IIT Delhi researchers develop lighter, breathable PPE to fight Covid-19 - education

Department of Textile and Fibre Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Delhi has developed a breathable and light-weighted PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) to fight COVID-19.

The Head of the Department Professor Dr SM Ishtiaque along with his PhD student, Biswa Ranjan Das, Scientist ‘D’ and Assistant Director, DMSRDE (DRDO), Kanpur, developed an advanced version of PPE.

“We have covered all the basic aspects and it meets the criteria specified by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. It is free of bacteria or virus penetration. Our PPE is equipped to cover 99.8 per cent bacteria,” said Dr Ishtiaque.

He further said that they consulted more than 150 doctors and the most pressing issue was that it was uncomfortable to wear.

“We have made the overalls more breathable than what doctors use now, with no compromise on safety. There is a minimum requirement of 3.5 kPa (kilopascals) but our PPE has the property of 15 kPa,” explained the professor.

Speaking about the material used, he said, “The fabric we used is very soft. When you wear it and work for long hours, you would want it to be comfortable and light. Our PPE weighs 300 grams while other PPEs weighs anywhere between 400-450 grams. We also emphasised on the reuse factor. The PPE can be washed twice and could be used thrice which in turn brings down the cost of purchase by three times.”

Priced at Rs 905 (including GST), the PPE overall would cost around Rs 300 for one time given the option to reuse.

He also spoke about the stitching of the overalls. “That was of utmost importance. A smallest of the hole could be hazardous. We made sure that the garment is sealed carefully in order to avoid virus penetration,” he added.

However, the feedback from the doctors is yet to come.

“We are eagerly waiting for their feedback. However, I wore it myself for five hours without any issue,” the professor said.

SAV’s supremacy in Bihar board results ends, only 3 out of 41 in top 10 - education

The class 10 board results of the Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) has brought bad news for state’s premiere school, Simultala Awasiya Vidyalay (SAV), which held sway in the top 10 in the last five years.

This year, it has no student in the top 5, while there are just three students among the 41 students in the top 10 – a steep fall for the institution set up in 2010 to fill the void of Netarhat Vidyalay that went to Jharkhand after Bihar’s bifurcation.

In its debut class 10 board exams in 2015, 19 students of the Simultala Awasiya Vidyalay (SAV) had secured more than 96% – a record since the inception of the Bihar board in 1952 – while 70 students got 90% to 96%. Since then, it hardly left any space for other schools in the top 10, until its near wipeout this year.

A dream project of Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, its students had captured the top 108 positions in 2016, while the turn of other schools came only after that. In 2019, its 16 students were in the top 10, which had a total of 18 students. This year, the SAV students ranked 7th, 8th and 10th.

The institution had struggled due to a host of issues and also had to skip two sessions 2013-14 & 2014-15. In 2017, it conducted test for class 7 and 8, along with entrance level class 6, after chief minister Nitish Kumar expressed his displeasure over its functioning.

Later a six-member committee was formed at the directive of the then chief secretary Anjani Kumar Singh. The committee submitted its report, but nothing changed. So far, four committees have been formed for improving the school functioning. The report also highlighted migration of students from SAV after Class 10.

SAV principal Rajiv Ranjan said the results were shocking and very difficult to digest. “We were never expecting such results in class 10 board. Nothing has changed in the school, but the results have taken a sudden dip this year,” he added.

Ranjan said there would be thorough review of performance and the students would certainly like to apply for scrutiny, as nobody was ready to believe it. “The shock is big and it will take time to absorb. We know the students. In Class 12, there could be variation as many students study outside at different places, but in class 10, it is difficult,” he added.

Even after a decade of its establishment, the school still does not have its own campus, though the government has a big budget for this school. It also has to manage with ad hoc teachers.

Later, the Bihar board issued a communiqué, saying that all the 115 students of SAV had secured first division marks, with the minimum being 73.20% and the highest being 94.80%.

Presidency University students to raise funds for cyclone-hit booksellers - education

Students of Presidency University on Tuesday pledged to stand by the cyclone-ravaged booksellers of College Street — the city’s one-stop destination for bibliophiles — and help them get back on their feet.

The students’ council of the varsity has joined hands with the institute’s publication society to reconstruct the ‘boi para’ (book mart) by raising funds for the cause.

College Street, a 2-km stretch in central Kolkata, houses hundreds of book stalls.

Cyclone ‘Amphan’, which tore through Bengal on May 20, flattened many such stalls, with books left floating in the waterlogged lane — the images of which have gone viral on social media.

“We were moved to tears after seeing images of books floating on the flooded street, as the stall owners watched helplessly. Nothing could be damaging than a calamity striking in the midst of a lockdown. After deliberations, the members of the council decided to approach classmates and other well- wishers for monetary help.

“The university’s publication society also came on board,” one of the students said.

The apex body of publishers and booksellers in the state has said that the losses incurred by the booksellers due to Amphan could run into crores. It has decided to request the state and central governments and different consulates in the city to come to the aid of the booksellers.

“We have named the initiative Boi Parar Pase Presidency- Pase thakun apnio (Presidency stands by the book hub of College Street — Need your support, too).

“College Street has always been the first choice of students when it came to book-hunting. So many of us have borrowed reference books from these stall owners by paying a nominal amount when we ran out of money. It’s time to do our bit,” another student said.

IIT, North Texas varsity ‘develop’ magnesium alloy which can replace steel, aluminium in automobiles - education

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, the University of North Texas and the US Army Research Laboratory have developed an engineered magnesium alloy which can replace steel and aluminium alloys in the automobile industry making vehicles more fuel efficient.

The researchers say the current industrial application of wrought magnesium alloys in structural components is very limited due to their poor strength, poor ductility, yield strength asymmetry and lack of high strain rate superplasticity despite their density being two-third of aluminium and one-quarter of steel.

According to Sushanta Kumar Panigrahi, Associate Professor at Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Madras, the new engineered alloy is strong, highly ductile and its superplasticity is achieved at higher strain-rates which reduces overall manufacturing time, effort and costs. “In addition to this, it is also lightweight, which helps lower the carbon footprint of vehicles. Lightweight vehicles need lesser fuel to run and are therefore more fuel efficient. In view of the compelling needs for economical usage of scarce energy resources and ever-stricter control over emissions to lower environmental impact, automotive and aerospace industries are searching for alternative advanced light-weight structural materials to existing conventional materials.

“Being one of the lightest and energy-efficient structural materials, magnesium alloys are potential candidates to replace steel and aluminium alloys in automotive and aerospace components since their density is two-thirds of aluminium and one-quarter of steel,” Panigrahi said.

The research has also been published in the reputed peer-reviewed journal Material Research Letters.

For the research, the scientists used a magnesium alloy containing rare earth elements like Gadolinium (Gd), Yttrium (Y) and Zirconium (Zr). The alloy was subjected to a thermo-mechanical processing technique (severe plastic deformation and ageing treatment) to obtain an ultrafine-grained version of this magnesium alloy.

Thereafter, the team engineered the nano-precipitates and thermally stable ultrafine intermetallic compounds in the ultra-fine-grained magnesium alloy. According to the team, through this technique, the group was able to achieve the highest combination of strength-ductility and highest high strain rate superplasticity among all the existing magnesium alloys reported in the literature to date.

“We are also trying to increase the load-bearing capacity of metals and alloys through microstructural engineering and processing of metals. After this feat, the team is all set to apply the same strategy of processing to other known magnesium alloys and metallic alloys with the intention of obtaining highly efficient stronger materials with superior performance,” Panigrahi said.

Sena slams Maharashtra Governor over stand on university exams - education

The ruling Shiv Sena in Maharashtra on Monday hit out at Governor B S Koshyari for being in favour of conducting final year university exams in the state, and said health of students cannot be put at risk amid the COVID-19 crisis.

An editorial in Sena mouthpiece ‘Saamana’ said when the RSS-backed Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has already opposed holding exams in Gujarat and Goa in the current scenario, why is Koshyari’s demand in contrast to it.

“Is it because the RSS-backed BJP is not in power in Maharashtra?” the Marathi daily asked.

Koshyari, who is the chancellor of universities in Maharashtra, last week asked Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to resolve the issue of conduct of final year university exams in the state “without any further delay in the larger interest of students”.

In a letter to CM, Koshyari said “not conducting the final year examinations by universities amounts to breach of the University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines”.

The governor also took strong objection to a letter written by state Higher and Technical Education Minister Uday Samant to UGC, recommending cancellation of final year exams.

Koshyari asked Thackeray to issue suitable instructions to Samant for his “unwarranted intervention”.

Defending Samant, the Sena said the minister had expressed his opinion about the examinations, but Koshyaris stand is to go ahead and conduct the exams.

“The RSS-backed students’ wing ABVP has already opposed holding exams in the current period in Gujarat and Goa. Then, why Koshyaris demand is in stark contract with ABVP. Is it because the RSS-backed BJP is not in power in Maharashtra?” the Uddhav Thackeray-led party wondered.

These examinations are important for the future of 10 lakh students in the state, but it cannot be held by jeopardising their health, it said.

“When almost all institutions are stretched to limits, how can the governor expect universities to overcome the challenges (of COVID-19) and hold exams?” it asked.

The governors concerns are genuine, but when students have returned home even from abroad, how can he expect exams to be held here for students of local universities, the Marathi publication said.

Major cities of the state like Mumbai, Pune, Aurangabad, where headquarters of prominent universities are located, are still under the grip of COVID-19, it noted.

“There is no point in pushing the demand for conducting exams at such a time,” it added.

The Sena had earlier also criticised Koshyari when he did not act on the Maharashtra Cabinet’s recommendation in April to nominate Uddhav Thackeray as member of the state Legislative Council from the governor’s quota.

Thackeray was eventually elected unopposed to the Upper House earlier this month.

Ahmedabad University starts admissions based on class 10, 11 scores - education

Ahmedabad University on Monday said it has started admissions to undergraduate programmes based on Class 10 and Class 11 scores, while students await their Class 12 results which are delayed due to the Covid-19 crisis.

Admissions to the institute’s graduate and PhD programmes for the session of 2020 are also underway, the university said.

“Our Class 12 students should not be worried at all about the next phase of their education at the University. We are committed to supporting students and ensuring that they do not lose an academic year as they leave school,” Ahmedabad University Vice-Chancellor, Pankaj Chandra, said in a statement.

“Our holistic admissions process is geared to understanding students and their context beyond marks. While high school scores are an important indicator of potential, our focus is on using different ways to bring to light the many ways in which young people can contribute and bring value to themselves and the larger community,” Chandra said.

In light of the COVID-19 crisis, Indian universities are now evaluating carefully how they can best support students who hope to enter the college this year.

“These are challenging times. We need to relook at how we engage with young minds differently and prepare them for a changed world. In this digitized environment, the onus is to constantly reimagine and innovate teaching methods, as we embrace a new world, post-Covid,” said Chandra, adding that Ahmedabad University was one of the first to take the plunge into online classroom education in the first week of lockdown.

Established in 2009, Ahmedabad University is a leading private, non-profit research university that offers students a liberal education focused on interdisciplinary learning and research thinking.

“The university uses a combination of academic results, faculty interactions, personal statements and a deep understanding of the context of each individual to admit students,” said Hansa Sachdev, Director, Office of Undergraduate Admissions and Financial Aid, Ahmedabad University.

“With the admissions team working remotely, the university is ensuring support to each applicant, as they navigate the changing landscape of University admissions,” she said.

CBSE to hold class 10, 12 exams in 15,000 centres - education

The pending class 10 and 12 board exams will be conducted by CBSE at 15,000 centres across the country instead of 3,000 centres planned earlier, Union HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ said on Monday.

The exams, which were postponed due to a nationwide lockdown imposed on March 25 to contain the spread of COVID-19, will now be held from July 1 to 15. “The class 10, 12 exams will now be conducted at over 15,000 exam centres across India. Earlier, CBSE was slated to hold exams at only 3,000 centres,” Nishank said.

The decision has been taken to ensure social distancing at exam centres and minimise travel for students.

The HRD ministry has already announced that students will appear for exams at schools in which they are enrolled rather than external examination centres. According to home ministry guidelines, there will be no exam centre in COVID-19 containment zones and states will be responsible for making transport arrangements for students to reach their respective centres.

Usually, board examinations are held at designated test centres to ensure minimum bias from schools and enable independent external invigilators to monitor the examination process.

The decision also means that the CBSE may have to mobilise greater number of invigilators and staff members. While Class 12 exams will be conducted across the country, the Class 10 exams are only pending in North East Delhi, where they could not be held due to the law-and-order situation in the wake of protests against the amended citizenship act.

Education in lockdown: Poor internet connectivity shadows online classes, many students walking to reception areas - education

With the government trying all options for education from online, to television classes through community radio, online education has not got the desired response due to poor internet connectivity in the remote areas of the hilly districts in the state.

Many times students had to trek for a few kilometres in certain areas to get a proper signal so that they could attend classes or submit their assignments online.

In the Bangaan region of Uttarkashi district, students have to trek around 10 to 12 km from their homes to a hilltop in Kotadhar area where they get mobile connectivity from the neighbouring state of Himachal Pradesh to join the online classes. Earlier this month, the locals from the region wrote to the prime minister demanding proper network connectivity in the age of Digital India.

Anish, a ten-year-old student from Silla village in the district shared a video talking about his problems with the district administration where he said that due to the lack of mobile network in the village, he has to walk into the forests where he can get a signal for online classes.

“Our village is one of the places where basic communication facilities are missing and villagers have to walk towards the forests at the time where they get signal on their phones. Sometimes it rains when we are outside and we are not able to study. Students are the ones who are suffering the most who have to travel 3-4 km at times during the lockdown to attend online classes,” said Anish.

The situation is similar in the bordering district of Pithoragarh where online classes failed to pick up as most areas do not have network connectivity or the guardians are not able to purchase smarts phones due to lack of money with them.

AK Jukariya, chief education officer of Pithoragarh said, “We started online classes for all 214 secondary and higher secondary schools in the district but only half of the schools could pick up it due to lack of network connectivity.”

Along with poor network connectivity is the added cost of procuring smartphones so that children can have access to online education.

Govind Singh Bhandari, president of Rajkiya Shikshak Sangh in Pithoragarh said, “Many parents who were told that online classes will be starting failed to purchase smartphones due to lack of money. Most parents who send their children to government schools cannot afford smartphones.”

Kishan Ram, a daily wage labourer from Tipalkot village in the district said, “Since the imposition of lockdown I have not gotten steady work or income. I have requested my neighbour to let my three daughters use his smartphone so that they can continue studying, but it mostly depends on his will and availability of network in our village.”

Villagers from Betalghat area, a remote area in Nainital district said that mobile network is not balanced across the village and they get signal only in the upper reaches.

Deepak Budhani, a resident of Unchakot village in Betalghat said that his house is in the lower part of the village while good signal can be reached only in the upper reaches of the village, so children are forced to trek till a particular point to study.

Since the starting of the lockdown, with the aims that each and every child in the Himalayan state is connected to education and regular classes, Uttarakhand education department started classes through community radio, internet, Whatsapp and classes via Doordarshan on television.

Mukul Sati, additional state project director for Samagra Sikhsha Abhiyan had said that community radio was chosen for primary classes as internet connectivity is not strong in the remote areas of the state and online education is not always possible.

In April, the state education department started live classes for Maths, Chemistry, Biology through Doordarshan for classes 9 to 12. The state education department had also started animated lessons for students through a mobile application named ‘Sampark Didi’, to keep the students engaged in studies in an interesting manner during the lockdown.

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has asked the students who are stranded and still living in Hostels to return back to their hometown and come back after the varsity re-opens. It may be recalled that many students had stayed back in the hostel though the university had been closed as the lockdown was imposed. STEAM education can lead to innovation and creativity - education

There is a lot to talk about the unprecedented challenges and impacts the Covid-19 crisis has put in front of us. Almost every sector has been hit hard, including children’s education too. The schools have been closed and children are learning from home. With all the daily routines and activities disrupted, it is easy to feel like a victim of the Covid-19 crisis. But there’s a silent hero that is bringing a change in the mindset of students, parents as well the teachers.

Amidst the novel Corona Virus crisis, many students are coming up with innovative and creative solutions in order to bring a change in the mindset of the society and minimise the damage and turn the situation into an opportunity. Yes, students are leveraging the STEAM skills in order to provide solutions to real-world problems by making the best use of their logical mindset, analytical and computational skills, cognitive approach etc.

STEAM and Innovation – Future Ready

STEAM Education is an interdisciplinary fusion of multiple fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) that aims to strengthen the core skills of the students and help them recognize their inner potential. The number of schools incorporating STEAM principles has increased exponentially in the past few years. According to a joint survey conducted by NITI Aayog and AIM, more than 6 million students have access to STEAM education facilities in their schools in India alone.

Right from the invention of the Wheel, Man has been continuously thriving. The thirst for development and upliftment of technology has never been stopped, and mankind continues to flourish through the advancement in technologies. Our educational system is tasked with preparing the next-gen leaders to succeed in life. But somewhere, we had been failing in incorporating critical-thinking skills and an innovative mindset in our children.

STEAM Education supports students to understand the fundamental laws of nature in a multi-disciplined way, transforming the mind of the student in the form of centralized innovation, and fostering their ability to solve problems. It gives students the right tools and approaches to explore new and creative ways of problem-solving, tinkering, pattern recognitions, and adjoining multiple domains. Over the past few years, there has been a dramatic rise in the patents filed by the students. A joint venture by NITI Aayog and AIM is promoting students to file patents and providing a workspace in the schools to quench the thirsts of the students for Innovation and Tinkering.

To tackle the negative impacts of Covid-19, students are taking the charge to save the mankind. Many students have come up with “Automatic Hand Sanitizers”, to prevent the spread of Corona Virus. Young minds are also creating awareness through their coding skills, and developing animated stories and games to create awareness in the society.

Early age Entrepeneurs – All Thanks to STEAM education

STEAM education in India is promoting the culture of Start-ups and entrepreneurship right from the early age. The government is taking many initiatives, including the ATL Marathon contest, where the students have to come up with the solutions to tackle the existing problems in the society. In 2018, around 5000 students participated in the competition where more than 1400 submissions were received. The Top 50 teams were called in for a 15 day Internship at IBM Bengaluru Campus, where all the innovators learned the essentials of entrepreneurship using

STEAM education skills. STEAM education is motivating students to adapt an innovative mindset and come up with creative solutions. The industries are leaving no stone unturned and are providing platforms for students to showcase their innovative skills. Competitions, Online Hackathons and Challenges are being organized from time to time, where students participate and thrive to create something innovative. Even in this lockdown period, students are making the best use of the time and are coming up with innovative solutions. A student designed and developed a prototype of a 3D printed facial mask to combat the novel virus. Many students have even developed minimalistic designs of Automatic Hand Sanitizers, and industries are taking forward their innovations to make it available for the masses.

According to PWC’s Innovation Benchmark 2017, 54% of innovating companies struggle to bridge the gap between innovation strategy and business strategy. This is the reason why big giants like Cisco, PepsiCo, Microsoft, and Google own initiatives to encourage STEAM education and skills development globally. In a survey conducted by the Education Commission of the States, STEAM jobs are likely to grow up by 13%, whereas all the other jobs will grow only by 9%. The hike is certain because many industries are embracing the concept of STEAM education and the need for innovative programs is rapidly increasing. The industries are focusing on long-term strategies, by hiring candidates with potential STEAM skills, which is far better than training and educating the workforce on occupation-specific skills.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (C.B.S.E) is also taking measures in promoting skill-based subjects, realising the uncapped potential of STEAM education. The Board will offer a choice to the students to opt from nine subjects which cover a wide variety of 21 st century skills including Artificial Intelligence, Design Thinking etc. STEAM education will play a crucial role in building the right mindset and providing an ecosystem for students to hone their innovation and creativity skills.

In this rapidly changing world, we need more innovators, tinkerers, and creators to provide sustainable development and better future alternatives. STEAM education is a proven model of accelerating the mindset right in the direction of crucial skills like Logical thinking, Computational thinking, Analytical skills, Critical thinking, and Creativity. All these skills put together will lead towards an innovative mindset, which will help students to have a better understanding of past and present cultures and aesthetics, moral values, and human nature, which in turn lead to progressive social development also. STEAM education teaching is not to impart content-based knowledge, but to develop students’ problem-solving ability and looking up for innovative solutions as an end goal.

Question in Goa Board’s Class 10 English exam stokes row - education

A question in the Goa Board’s Class 10 English exam paper has stirred a controversy as it allegedly portrays the state government in poor light and refers to corruption in recruitment.

The ruling BJP has demanded action in the matter, while the opposition Congress said the question reflects the “reality of the state government”.

In the English exam held last week, the controversial question described a conversation between two persons, wherein one says he has to opt for a job in Portugal because of jobs being scarce here, and that one needs to have influence and money to get a job.

Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary School Education Chairman Ramakrishna Samant on Monday said an inquiry would be initiated into how such a question was included in the English paper of the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) exam.

“We will conduct an inquiry into it immediately, Samant said.

Goa is a former Portuguese colony. It was liberated from the Portuguese rule in 1961.

State BJP general secretary Narendra Sawaikar also demanded strict action in the matter.

“The Goa Board should immediately initiate strict action against the paper setter, moderator and whosoever is involved in the process of this paper setting. This act has to be punished,” he tweeted on Sunday.

Former Goa BJP chief Rajendra Arlekar said the question provokes an “anti-Goa and anti-India feeling”.

Portuguese stooges in Goa Board? Look at question D of English paper of SSCE. Provoking anti-Goa and anti-India feeling. Paper setter must be punished,” he tweeted.

Goa Surakasha Manch (GSM) president Subhash Velingkar said the question “smacks of pro-Portuguese mentality”.

Velingkar, who is the former Goa RSS chief, demanded that the name of the paper setter and the board of studies which approved the question paper be made public.

He also demanded an inquiry into the matter and action against those found guilty.

However, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president Girish Chodankar said the question reflects current reality of the state government.

No need to change the voice. Message is loud and clear in this question of SSC exam paper. The @BJP4Goa Government under @goacm @DrPramodPSawant is corrupt. Now the ‘Defects’ are visible even in Education System,” he tweeted.

Jharkhand Academic Council (JAC) is all set to begin the evaluation of examination papers for Class-10 (matriculation) and Class-12 (intermediate) from May 28, with a target to declare the results by first week of July, officials said.

The evaluation is beginning after more than two months from its schedule. With aim to declare the results by May, JAC had earlier fixed March 20 for evaluation of examination papers. However, Corona spread followed by lockdown from March 25 spoiled the JAC’s plan. JAC deferred evaluation till April 1 but it was also deferred due to another lockdown.

JAC secretary Mahip Kumar Singh said, “The evaluation of papers will be conducted in 67 centres of 19 districts in Jharkhand from May 28. More than 9,500 evaluators are being engaged in the task.”

Singh said, “If evaluation goes as per our plan, it will take 25 days to complete. If it happens, we may declare the results by July first week. We cannot fix a date for declaration of results right now due to prevailing situation of Covid-19.”

He said that the evaluation would be conducted under surveillance of CCTV cameras. “Earlier, we had planned to broadcast live evaluation process through JAC portal. But, it will not be possible right now due to shortage of human resource.”

Singh further added standard protocol, which has been designed to contain the spread of Coronavirus, would be followed. “The evaluators will have to maintain social distancing and they have to follow the sanitization protocol. A detailed guideline in this regard has been forwarded to all evaluators,” he said.

JAC conducted the matriculation (Class-10) and intermediate (Class-12) examinations in February. Over 6.21 students wrote the matriculation and intermediate papers across 1410 centres..

Both the examinations started from February 10 and concluded on February 28. Over 3.87 lakh students wrote the papers in matriculation (Class-10) examination at 940 centres, while 2.34 lakh students took the intermediate examinations in 470 centres.

The class-10 board exams began with the home science paper and conclude with the Sanskrit paper on February 28, while the inter exams started with vocational papers and conclude with biology, geography, and business mathematics on the same date.

The examinations held under CCTVs surveillance. The cameras had been installed largely this year across the centres to stop unfair means practices during the examination.

IIM Lucknow Admissions 2020: First list released after online interview, no written ability test this year - education

The Indian Institute of Management Lucknow (IIML) is getting ready to complete the admission process for the batch of 2020-22. The premier B-school announced the list of selected candidates on late Saturday evening who appeared in virtual interview this year.

IIML director, Professor Archana Shukla said, “Now gradually all IIM’s are declaring the list of selected candidates whose results are ready. In the same process we also announced list of selected candidates. As soon as we completed online interviews, we declared our results.”

“We had to do interviews online. We have declared the first list. The second and third list will follow thereafter. That’s the normal admission process. We have batch size of approximately 450 students,” she said.

When asked about when will the new session start, Prof Shukla said, “We can’t start the session early. We are ready full swing to further new session. I don’t think anybody will start the session by June end.”

She said, “We are planning to start with the online remedial session for first year. We have to avoid influx of students on campus initially so that social distancing could be followed. We will start classes when it opens completely as per the government advisory. We cant give the exact dates when the session starts.”

According to IIML director, the normal classes may begin from July end or first week of August “We will also have to hold the examination for the first year students also which was scheduled from March 24 and was postponed because of pandemic COVID-19,” she said.

This year IIML revised its admission policy for its postgraduate programmes for academic year 2020-22, IIM-L officials said. “IIM Lucknow excluded the writing ability test (WAT) that was of 10 marks from the evaluation components for admission to PGP-ABM/ PGP-SM owing to restrictions imposed by the government to contain Covid-19,” said Prof Vikas Srivastava, IIM-L spokesman.

This change in the evaluation components is applicable only for the batch of 2020-22, he said.

IIT-Bhubaneswar develops technology for conducting online exams - education

The IIT-Bhubaneswar said it has created a state-of-the-art method of conducting online examinations in a comprehensive manner, plugging the loopholes in existing systems.

This method can be used for holding all types of examinations, including class tests and end-semester examinations of an institute, the premier institute said in a statement.

This method uses the currently available commercial systems such as the Wheebox as a part of it.

The new method will overcome several limitations of holding only computer-based tests, lacking the robustness, reliability of invigilation and connection faced by the commercially available online examination systems, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) said.

According to RV Raja Kumar, Director, IIT-Bhubaneswar, the proposed online examination system is robust and can be used for holding tests of wide-ranging nature from simple computer-based ones to detailed conventional examinations.

The system uses a virtual examination hall, actual invigilators, question paper distribution online and submission/reception of soft copies of answer books which may be printed, if needed, he said.

The system uses two or more network connections for the reliability of the connection and additional facility for proctoring for reliable invigilation.

Unlike in systems where a student has to come to an examination centre equipped with computers, in the proposed system, a student can take the examination from home or anywhere across the globe, Kumar said.

The institute has successfully tested the entire system by holding a mock test involving about 240 students stationed across the country with question papers of 31 subjects and 20 invigilators.

It was found that the tests can be held successfully and effectively as long a student has at least one of the two connections working at any time during the examination, Kumar added.
