Maharashtra Governor urges students to know about spiritual intelligence - education

Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari on Thursday said that the world was moving towards Artificial Intelligence (AI), but students should also acquire the knowledge of ‘spiritual intelligence’.

He also said that educational institutions will have to combine innovation and incubation with research and invention to become centers of excellence.

He was speaking while inaugurating HSNC Cluster University, a public-private partnership (PPP) initiative of the Hyderabad Sind National Collegiate (HSNC) Board and the Maharashtra government, via video-conference.

“The world is moving towards Artificial Intelligence,” the governor said, and urged the students to also acquire the knowledge of ‘adhyatmik’ (spiritual) intelligence, which is the “core heritage of the country”.

Recalling the words of Swami Vivekananda on education, the governor said students should endeavour to awaken the divinity and perfection within them through acquisition of knowledge.

He also said that all stakeholders need to work with coordination, dedication and discipline to improve the standards of higher education.

Koshyari said that the central government was keen on good colleges forming cluster universities.

“Such clusters would enable best colleges to become centres of excellence,” he said.

The governor complimented the HSNC Board for forming the cluster university comprising K C College, H R College and the Bombay Teachers’ Training College.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, who also attended the ceremony, lauded the HSNC Cluster University for offering choice-based courses in music, dance, art and other subjects.

“Art is an essential component of life…Art makes learning pleasurable and delightful. If I had not become chief minister, I would have become an artist. In fact, I am chief minister because I am an artist,” he said.

Thackeray described knowledge as an essential requirement of life.

“Therefore imparting education must be continued using technological tools even during calamity situations,” he said.

Maharashtra Minister of Higher Education Uday Samant said the government was considering a proposal to convert the Sir J J School of Art into a university.

He said the government was also considering a plan of creating vertical universities.

NIRF Rankings 2020: IITs, IIMs and Delhi colleges dominate HRD Ministry’s India Rankings list - education

IIT Madras was again chosen as the top institution to study in the country while Bangalore based Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and IIT Delhi bagged the second and the third spot in the India Rankings 2020, the HRD ministry’s rankings of Indian colleges and universities.

Seven IITs, including the ones in Bombay, Kharagpur, Kanpur, Guwahati and Roorkee, featured in the overall top ten list with the IISc, Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Benaras Hindu University (BHU) being the three non-IITs who made it.

HRD minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank announced the results of the rankings which are brought out every year by his ministry. IIT Madras was the top institution in the overall category in last year’s rankings as well.

Category wise, among universities, the top three positions went to IISc, JNU and BHU followed by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore (fourth), Jadavpur University (fifth), University of Hyderabad (sixth), Calcutta University (seventh) and Manipal Academy of Higher Education (eighth positions).

Savitribai Phule Pune University was at the ninth position while Jamia Millia Islamia stood at the tenth spot.

Delhi University and Anna University, which have been chosen to be a part of the government’s Institute of Eminence programme, stood at the eleventh and twelfth spots.

Among management institutions, the dominance of IIMs was similar to dominance of the IITs in the overall list (and also in the list of engineering institutions).

The three older IIMs, Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Calcutta garnered the top three spots. The IIM at Lucknow followed by IIT Kharagpur took the fourth and fifth spots. IIM Kozhikode and Indore were sixth and seventh. IIT Delhi got the eighth spot in the discipline of management. Xavier Labour Relations Institute (XLRI), Jamshedpur and Management Development Institute (MDI) Gurgaon got the ninth and tenth spots.

In the colleges list, those from Delhi, especially the women’s colleges stood out.

Miranda House was chosen as the country’s best college followed by Lady Shri Ram College for Women. The Hindu College stood at the third position followed by its north campus neighbour St Stephen’s. Presidency College from Chennai stood at the fifth spot followed by Loyola College in the same city. St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata stood seventh while Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira, Howrah was chosen as the eight best college in the country in the HRD ministry rankings.

Hans Raj College Delhi was at the ninth position while PSGR Krishnammal College for Women, Coimbatore stood at the tenth position.

In the Engineering category it was IITs all the way. The IITs at Madras, Delhi, Bombay, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Roorkee, Guwahati, Hyderabad and Indore bagged nine of the ten positions. NIT Tiruchirappalli was the only non-IIT in the list.

Among medical institutions,AIIMS Delhi was chose the top college followed by PGI, Chandigarh and CMC, Vellore. National Law School, Bengaluru was chosen as the best Law college followed by National Law University, Delhi and NALSAR, Hyderabad.

In the pharmacy category, the topper was Jamia Hamdard in Delhi followed by Panjab University, Chandigarh. The National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research, Mohali stood in the third position.

The IITs of Roorkee and Kharagpur and NIT Calicut were the top three architecture colleges. Delhi’s Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences, Manipal Institute of Dental Sciences and Dr D Y Patil Vidyapeeth Pune were the top three in the newly introduced Dental Colleges category.

Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director, IIT Madras, said, “We are delighted to maintain our top position for the fifth time running (in the engineering category) and ever since the NIRF rankings were launched. This is the result of the excellent work of our faculty, students and staff, and we look forward to continue on the path of excellence in the coming years and make a mark nationally and internationally.”

HRD minister Pokhriyal said that these rankings acts as a guide to students for selection of universities based on a set of criteria and helps universities to improve their performance. Minister of State for HRD Sanjay Dhotre said participation in such ranking framework shows the confidence of the institution.

The ranking framework evaluates institutions on five parameters: Teaching, Learning and Resources (TLR), Research and Professional Practice (RP), Graduation Outcomes (GO), Outreach and Inclusivity (OI) and Perception (PR).

A total 3771 institutions offered themselves for ranking under “Overall”, category-specific and domain-specific rankings for India Rankings 2020. In all, 5805 applications for ranking were made by these 3771 unique applicant institutions, which include 294 Universities, 1071 Engineering Institutions, 630 Management Institutions, 334 Pharmacy Institutions, 97 Law Institutions, 118 Medical Institutions, 48 Architecture Institutions and 1659 General Degree Colleges. Schools, parents have increased role to play to ensure kids’ mental health during Covid-19: Experts - education

Schools and parents have bigger roles to play with kids being home-bound due to the COVID-19 pandemic so that the mental health issues arising due to outdoor activities being restricted can be addressed, according to experts.

Samir Parikh, director, Department of Mental Health and Behavioural Sciences, Fortis Hospital, has pointed out that the prevailing uncertainty surrounding the ongoing pandemic can give rise to feelings of stress and anxiety in adults and children alike.

“The lack of outdoor physical activity may lead children to feel more restless. The inability to meet and interact with peers may also create feelings of loneliness and isolation. In these times, it is important to allow children the space to express their thoughts and feelings and for adults to talk to children about the situation, but in a manner that is age-appropriate,” he said.

“It is recommended for parents to help provide a sense of normalcy in a child’s life by incorporating a structure and routine. Alongside, efforts should be made to encourage a sense of positivity. Help children see this as an opportunity to pick up a new skill or engage in a new hobby. Spend quality time as a family — have conversations over meals, play board games, revisit old photo albums or watch television together. Setting up interactions with friends through video-conference should also be encouraged,” Parikh added.

Universities and schools across the country have been closed since March 16, when the Centre announced a nationwide classroom shutdown as part of a slew of measures to contain the COVID-19 outbreak.

A 21-day nationwide lockdown was announced on March 24, which came into effect the next day. While the government has announced easing of certain restrictions, the schools and colleges continue to remain closed.

“It is important for schools to hold both structured and unstructured conversations around the pandemic and lockdown to allow the students the opportunity to express their concerns and use this time as a learning opportunity. Ensuring regular interactions with peers and teachers plays a significant role in helping children adjust with the transition as is being expected at these unprecedented times,” Parikh said.

According to Sushant Kalra, founder, Parvarish, an institute of parenting, children who are very high on physical, mental and emotional energy are not getting any outlet to express.

“Being confined to their homes without connecting with their peers, not being able to play, study, enjoy, eat, meet, celebrate, have bottled them up. The charged vibes from the adults in the family is adding to the unhealthy environment.

“A critical aspect of supporting children is to up the level of focus on the mental and emotional health of children and parents. Mental and emotional health has always taken a back seat when it comes to acquiring the necessary skills and even to acknowledge the need for the same. Also, the focus on nurturing life skills and competencies of children needs to be built into the curriculum,” he added.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has started a mental health helpline for students and live fitness sessions for children to keep them active during the pandemic.

Uttarakhand Boards 2020: Confusion prevails among students in containment zones - education

As Uttarakhand government released the date sheet for the remaining board exams to be held from June 22-25, confusion still prevails among students who live in containment zones.

RK Kunwar, director for school education department said that the board examination dates were changed from June 20-23 to June 22-25 Tuesday as the state government has decided to keep everything shut on weekends in Dehradun and one of the earlier dates was falling on a weekend.

“With everything being closed in Dehradun, it would be difficult for teachers and students to reach the examination centers so we decided to change the dates. Officials are still discussing on what exactly will be done for students who stay in containment zones so that they do not face any difficulty in reaching the exam center. For now, as per the instructions of the central government, exam centers will not be set up in containment zones,” said Kunwar.

Speaking on arrangements at the examination center, Kunwar said, “Keeping social and physical distancing in mind we have doubled the number of rooms being used in every examination center. Students have also been asked to reach the examination center one hour before the scheduled exam time so that it can be ensured that each and every student has sanitised their hands, their temperatures are checked, are wearing masks and seated properly following physical distancing.”

He further added that if it is found during thermal scanning that the temperature of any student is above normal, then “instead of making them feel scared, special counsellors will talk to the students to make them feel comfortable and they would be made to sit in a separate room for writing the examination.”

“We do not want the student to panic or get scared in such a situation which in turn affects his/her performance in the examination. We will make sure that all students are made to feel comfortable while writing the exam,” added the director for school education.

QS Rankings: 2 IITs, IISc Bengaluru among top 200 in World University Rankings - education

Two Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) — Delhi and Bombay — and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru have maintained their positions in the top 200 in the QS World University Rankings despite losing some points.

In the 2021 QS rankings announced in London on Wednesday, IIT Bombay continues to be the best-ranked Indian institute at 172, notwithstanding a 20-slot dip from the 2020 ranking when it was at 152. IIT Delhi, at 182 last year, is now ranked 193.

IISc fell in the rankings by one spot from 184 to 185. In total, 21 Indian higher education institutions have found place among the world’s top 1,000. Of the 21 universities, 14 have fallen in the rank over the past 12 months, while four have improved their position.

Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, has been ranked 470 globally, an improvement of 21 places from last year when it was at 491.

“Though India’s universities have dropped as a group this year, this is because of other universities across the world making increasingly-intense efforts to enhance their educational offerings,” said Ben Sowter, the Director of Research at QS.

“To regain the lost ground, Indian higher education must find ways of increasing teaching capacity, and of attracting more talented students and faculty from across the world to study in India. There is plenty of potential, and there are pockets of excellence, within the Indian system,” Sowter added.

The QS Rankings is the second consecutive international list where Indian universities have fared poorly compared to 2020. Last week, the Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University rankings also showed that Indian institutes have slipped in their standings.

IIT Delhi Director V Ramgopal Rao, however, said the rankings should be viewed in a different context.

“The character of our institutions is different. Also, it is a marathon we are running, not a 100-mt race. This is a very dicey and a non-transparent metric. Also, we are known in India. But international reputation needs an altogether different strategy. We need a global campaign for education like what the country has done with ‘Incredible India’ for tourism,” Rao said.

“Need to hire a brand building agency and aggressively campaign our Study in India initiatives, highlighting the achievements of IITs and our top institutions. Also, perception-based scores by these agencies are open to a lot of fallacies and other considerations. We have all had issues with this,” he added.

The HRD Ministry’s National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) will be announced on Thursday. The rankings are usually announced in April but had to be postponed due to COVID-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) said it has maintained its position for third consecutive year in the coveted rankings.  It said it has been ranked at 15th among Indian institutions including IISc and IITs and at sixth position among universities in India.

11:10 am| Broad Parameters (overall):

Teaching, Learning & Resources (TLR)

Research and Professional Practice (RP)

Graduation Outcomes (GO)

Outreach and Inclusivity (OI)

This is to be done through a survey conducted over a large category of Employers, Professionals from Reputed Organizations and a large category of academics to ascertain their preference for graduates of different institutions.

11:28 am| NIRF also has a discipline-wise ranking methodology. The disciplines include engineering, management, architecture, law, medical, pharmacy and colleges.

11:30 am| Under the discipline-wise ranking methodology, NIRF follows the same ‘broad parameters’ that are used for overall ranking.
