Ending some uncertainty for students, the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K) has decided to promote all students including the final year graduating students depending upon their performance in the semester.

“As a one-time exception, all the students will be awarded grades for their courses based on mid semester exam/quizzes/assignments/projects etc and such other performance indicators obtained through online instruction during suspension of the semester and as decided by the instructors,” said IIT-K director Abhay Karandikar on Sunday.

Director said, “Additionally, the non graduating students have been given the option to appear in a re-examination in order to improve their grades. The re-examination will be conducted as a one-time measure once the semester resumes.”

He said that BTech/BS students in their final year, who wish to convert to Dual Degree will be permitted to do so. Similarly, eligible Masters students can also apply for conversion to PhD program.

The Masters students who were unable to complete their research work for Masters thesis due to the lockdown have been given the option to submit a Masters project report in order to enable them to graduate. Further details of the decisions of the Senate and various implementation aspects will be communicated to the students separately.

On the whole, IIT Kanpur Senate has adopted several extraordinary measures to help the anxious students (especially those in their graduating year) whose academics have been disrupted due to Covid19.

IIT-K director Facebook post reads as of now, no decision has been taken regarding the commencement of the next semester and allowing students into the hostels.

“We are working out details with a plan to ensure safety and well being of all students on the campus. These details will communicate with the students in this regard in due course,” he said.

Parents protest after school in Ludhiana announces fee hike amid lockdown - education

Parents of students protested here on Saturday against the hike in fees by a private school at Golf Link Road.

The fee had been hiked after the Punjab and Haryana High Court issued an order allowing schools to charge 70 per cent of the total fee during the lockdown period.

The protestors were seen maintaining social distancing norms and wearing masks while speaking against the school’s move to increase the fees.

“The school has increased tuition fee by Rs 600 per month despite the high court’s order that schools can charge only 70 per cent of total school fees,” Sunny Sabharwal, a parent told ANI.

“They only provide photos of pages on WhatsApp. All the burden is on the parents’ shoulders. Our incomes have been affected due to coronavirus. The school authorities did not even allow us to meet the principal,” he said.

Another parent, Navpreet Kaur, the school administration should understand the situation of parents.

“We understand the school also has to bear expenses but they need to understand our situation as well. All businesses have come to a standstill in the last two months,” she said.

National Test Abhyas app that was launched by union HRD minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank on Wednesday has been downloaded by over two lakh medical and engineering aspirants of India within 72 hours. The minister on Friday informed this on Twitter and said, “The National Test Abyaas App launched by HRD Ministry’s NTA for students preparing for JEE (Mains) and NEET has become very popular and within less than 72 hours of its launch, more than 2,00,000 students have downloaded this app. Over 80,000 students have also appeared for mock tests.”

The National Test Abhyas app provides free mock tests to the JEE and NEET aspirants. Students get one full length question paper for JEE main, advanced and NEET exams daily. The duration to attempt the questions is of three hours. Students can attempt it anytime during the day as per their convenience.

“A large number of students appear for these competitive examinations and a lot of students could not study in private coaching institutes. Keeping in mind their needs, NTA has launched this app which will facilitate them in preparing for the exams,” the minister said in a video tweeted by him. He also thanked NTA DG Vineet Joshi for this app.

“In the time of this unprecedented health emergency, this app will help the students to prepare for the examinations. Through this app, our goal is to create world’s largest virtual test system which will provide immediate, real and unbiased results,” Nishank said

Delhi University’s History department raises concerns over open book exams - education

The faculty members of the Delhi University’s Department of History have joined the chorus against the administration’s decision to conduct online open book exams in case the situation due to the coronavirus outbreak doesn’t normalise.

DU’s Sociology and Economics departments have already voiced their disagreement with the move, while the teachers’ association and students’ union held an online campaign against the decision.

The faculty members of the Department of History wrote to DU VC Yogesh Tyagi against the move and suggested alternatives.

The Combined Committee of Courses (CoC) for postgraduate (PG), undergraduate (UG) honours courses and programmes of the Department of History held a meeting on May 19 via Zoom.

The CoC also discussed the written responses received from a large number of PG History students regarding online open book examinations.

It noted that the coronavirus outbreak and the lockdown led to an unprecedented situation.

The people are dealing with several issues, including infrastructural constraints, technological obstacles, economic hardships, dislocation of students and/or their families, and the challenging environments in many households, it said.

A significant number of students do not have access to a stable WiFi/4G internet, or a smart device with camera/scanner, the faculty members said. “Moreover, many students are stranded away from their notes, reading materials and even the minimum required stationary for an OBE,” the CoC said.

The students have categorically voiced their opinion that offline/online open book examinations scheduled in July will not be fair since they were taught for an altogether different mode of assessment.

The CoC suggested that for undergraduate students in the sixth semester, an average of the marks of previous semesters can be accounted for the 75% marks of the total marks and the remaining 25 per cent will be the internal evaluation marks of final semester.

For postgraduate students in the fourth semester, an average of the marks of the previous three semesters can be taken for the 75 per cent marks while the remaining 25 per cent can be the internal evaluation of the fourth semester, it said.

The CoC also stressed that those who were not able to submit assignments due to problems during the lockdown be given additional time in July to do so.
