Madras High Court declines to stay online classes for school students - education

The Madras High Court on Wednesday declined to grant an interim stay on online classes conducted by schools for students.

Observing that continuation of online education without sufficient guidelines is a matter of larger public importance, the court issued notice to the Centre and the state government and posted the matter to June 25 for filing counters.

A division bench of Justices Vineet Kothari and R Suresh Kumar issued the notice while hearing a petition seeking to restrain educational institutions from conducting online classes without framing proper schemes and guidelines.

Government pleader V Jayaprakash Narayan submitted that the state has not yet permitted the conduct of online classes by schools and colleges.

The institutions were also restrained — through a government order — from demanding fee,he submitted.

Senior counsel S Prabhakaran for the petitioner requested the court to pass an interim order restraining educational institutions from conducting such classes.

The court, however,directed the Centre and the state government to file a report on the availability of any guidelines governing such online classes and adjourned the hearing to June 25.

JEE Main 2020: Tips and tricks to ace Physics paper - education

JEE Main 2020: Joint Entrance Examination, or JEE, is an entrance test for admissions in various prestigious engineering colleges in the country. With the exam being postponed this year due to the pandemic, students have got extra time for preparation. Here are some tips and tricks to help you prepare for the physics section of the exam.

General points to be taken into consideration:

JEE Mains, being a competitive exam, it is all about scoring. We have a few smart tactics that can help to optimize your preparation:

1.It is necessary to have a concrete idea about the whole syllabus and to segregate your strong points.

2.Avoid those parts where you lag behind and usually take a lot of time and effort.

3.Always carry small chits of formulae; have a look at them and recollect them in your leisure time to remember formulae in an easy and effective way.

4.Practice previous years’ papers to have an idea of the trends of questions and take mock tests by setting the exact same time that’s allotted for the exam after learning the concepts.

5.While learning, NCERT is the most important book to brush up the concepts and HC Verma and DC Pandey are good for practice.

Weightage of important topics:

A large part of the Physics paper in JEE Mains is dominated by questions from: Vector and Simple Mathematics {2-3 questions}, Mechanics [3-4 questions], Electrostatics [2-3 questions], Electricity and Magnetism [3-4 questions], Wave and Optics [2-4 questions], Modern Physics [3-5 questions] and Heat and Thermodynamics [2-3 questions]. These major topics make almost 65-75% of the complete paper.

Allocation of time to each topic [4-6 hrs/day]:

•Vector and simple Mathematics- 3 days

• Mechanics – 10-12 days

• Waves and oscillations- 5 days

•Electrostatics- 4-5 days

•Electricity and magnetism- 7-8 days

Final revision and question answering tactics:

1.No new concepts should be learned during the final revision.

2.During the final revision, only the short notes prepared by students or trusted sources should be revised instead of the whole book.

3.A day before the exam, sleep adequately, and except very important things nothing should be revised.

4.During the exam, one should make sure there is no extra burden of revision on you, let the mind be calm but confident and content.

5.One must focus on easy questions first [ ~ 50-60% of the whole question paper], then moderate [ 25-35%] and at last the tough questions [15-25%]

6.Students should fill the OMR sheet very carefully without any lag as the whole effort is judged on the basis of the sheet.

Quicker calculations and a strong sense of your fundamentals are what help you in the long run.

Solving good mock tests is important as it gives you an idea of your weak and strong areas and the time taken to solve questions from each topic.

Last year, there were over 11.5 lakh applicants in JEE Main. Students should remember that the best strategy to crack this exam is to keep your mind calm and give it your best shot.

CBSE 12th Exams 2020: Plea in SC seeks quashing of board’s notification to conduct remaining exams - education

A plea has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking quashing of a notification of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) for conducting the remaining examinations of Class XII from July 1 to July 15 amid the increase in number of COVID-19 cases across the country.

The plea, filed by some parents of students who are appearing in class XII examination, has sought a direction to the CBSE to declare the results on the basis of exam already conducted and to calculate it on an average basis with internal assessment marks of the remaining subjects.

Raising concern over the safety of lakhs of students, the plea has said that they might be exposed to COVID-19 infection if they have to appear in the examinations amid the increase in number of cases of virus infection.

It urged the apex court to quash the May 18 notification of the CBSE by which the date sheet for remaining exams of Class XII was declared and also to stay it till the plea is decided by the court.

“The said petition would also demonstrate the extent of discriminatory and arbitrariness conduct of the respondent/CBSE in issuing the notification for holding of the remaining examination and that too in the month of July, 2020 wherein as per the AIIMS data, the said COVID-19 pandemic would be at its peak,” the plea said.

It alleged that considering the gravity of COVID-19 pandemic, the CBSE has cancelled the examinations of Class X and XII for its around 250 schools which are situated abroad and has adopted the criteria of awarding marks on the basis of either practical exams conducted or the internal assessment marks.

“It is highly regretful that the respondents (CBSE and Ministry of Human Resource Development) herein have no genuine concern about putting the lives at peril of all the students pan India and have no explanation whatsoever in insisting upon holding the said examination in India,” the plea claimed. It said that in April this year, the CBSE had directed the schools to promote students of classes IX and XI to the respective next grades on the basis of school based assessments.

It said that on May 25, the Ministry of Human Resource and Development had announced about conducting of exams for classes X and XII class students in almost 15,000 exam centres as against 3,000 centres which were used earlier.

“Ensuring proper cleanliness and safety standards as prescribed by the concerned government in COVID-19 situation in those 15,000 exam centres spreading over length and breadth of the country including rural sectors would not only be risking health and life of children but also would be an exercise in futility and an eyewash,” the plea said. It said even if it is to be assumed that 50 per cent of coronavirus cases are asymptomatic then the students, who will appear in the exams, could be potential careers posing a great risk to themselves and also their family members. The plea said that several premier educational institutes, like Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), has also cancelled its exams including those of final year students because of the pandemic situation. The plea has also raised concern over the issue where an examination centre might fall within the COVID-19 containment zone.

UPSC ISS Notification 2020 released, check important dates, eligibility, exam pattern here - education

UPSC ISS Notification 2020: Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has released the official notification for Indian Statistical Services (ISS) Exam 2020. With release of the official notification, the online application process has also begun today. Aspirants can apply for UPSC ISS 2020 exam between June 10 and 30 till 6 pm at upsconline.nic.in. The approximate number of vacancies to be filling through ISS exam is 47. The exam will be conducted on October 16.

UPSC will let the applicants withdraw their applications from July 7 to 13, till 6 pm if they drop the idea of appearing in the exam and hence saving an attempt.

Eligibility: Applicants should have a bachelor’s or master’s degree with statistics/mathematical statistics/ applied statistics as one of the subject from a recognised university.

Applicants can pay application fee of Rs 200 till June 29 only. All female candidates and candidates belonging to scheduled caste/ tribe and persons with benchmark disability do not have to pay any fee.

Scheme of Examination: UPSC ISS 2020 exam will be conducted in two parts. The first part will be a written exam carrying a maximum of 1000 marks while the second part will be viva-voce of such candidates as may be called by UPSC. The viva-voce carries a maximum of 200 marks.

Exam Pattern:

General English — 100 marks

General Studies –100 marks

Statistics-I (Objective) — 200 marks

Statistics-II (Objective) — 200 marks

Statistics-III (Descriptive) — 200 marks

Statistics-IV (Descriptive) — 200 marks

Statistics I and II will be of Objective Type Questions (80 questions with maximum marks of 200 in each paper) to be attempted in 120 minutes.

Statistics III and IV will be of Descriptive Type having Short Answer/ Small Problems Questions (50%) and Long Answer and Comprehension problem questions (50%). At least one Short Answer and One Long Answer Question from each section is compulsory.

In Statistics-IV, equal number of questions i.e. 50% weightage from all the sub-sections below and candidates have to choose any two sub-sections and answer.

The papers on General English and General Studies will be of subjective type.

UPSC Indian Economic Services Exam 2020 won’t be conducted, no vacancy reported - education

UPSC IES 2020: Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) will not conduct Indian Economic Services Exam this year as the department of Economic Affairs, ministry of finance has not reported any vacancy. The UPSC was expected to release the IES notification 2020 on June 10.

The vacancies are reported by the concerned department after which the commission issues a recruitment notification/ advertisement in order to invite applications to fill the vacant posts.

UPSC on Wednesday released a short notice on its official website that reads, “Indian Economic Service Examination, 2020 will not be held due to NIL vacancy reported for the Indian Economic Service by the Ministry of Finance (Department of Economic Affairs).”

UPSC has on June 5 released a revised calendar. According to the calendar, the UPSC IES exam was scheduled to be held on October 16.Moreover, the UPSC civil services prelims exam will be held on October 4 while the main exam will be held on January 8, 2021.

Bar Council of India tells varsities to promote all law students, barring those in final year - education

The Bar Council of India (BCI)—a statutory body of the country that regulates legal practice and education in India—has asked universities to promote all law students, except those in the final year, on the basis of their previous year’s marks and performance in the internal examination of the current year, inform officials.

In a missive sent to vice-chancellors and registrars of all law varsities as well as the principals, deans, and head of departments of all centres of legal education of the country including Allahabad University (AU), BCI secretary Srimanto Sen has sent fresh guidelines as decided by BCI for promotion of law students to the next year and the criteria for law exams amid the Covid-19 crisis, said Dean (Law) of AU Prof RK Chaubey.

He said that AU will now have to take the necessary action as per the directives issued by BCI.

AU PRO Shailendra Mishra said that the university was committed to adhering to BCI guidelines and that BCI letter would now be put before the appropriate bodies of the central university for necessary action.

The missive, a copy of which is with HT, says that the general council of BCI in its meeting held on May 24 has resolved to pass these resolutions and guidelines, in the light of detailed guidelines issued by the University Grants Commission on April 27.

BCI has held that final year students of 3 years and 5 years of law courses may be allowed to appear in online examinations. However, the Universities must adopt an alternative strategy for conducting examinations for those students who are unable to avail the online examinations for any reason, it adds.

For intermediate semester students, the BCI has asked institutions to promote them on the basis of performance of previous years and marks obtained in internal examination of the current year. The Universities are directed to conduct the end semester examination within a month of reopening of the colleges, the letter directs.

BCI has made plain that universities must adhere to Covid-19 protocol and ensure that the norms of social distancing are adhered to on the campus and all classrooms and examination halls are sanitized from time to time. The safety and health of the students should not be compromised at any cost, it makes clear.

The Universities have also been instructed to maintain the highest academic standards and integrity in conducting the examinations.
