QS Rankings: 2 IITs, IISc Bengaluru among top 200 in World University Rankings - education

Two Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) — Delhi and Bombay — and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru have maintained their positions in the top 200 in the QS World University Rankings despite losing some points.

In the 2021 QS rankings announced in London on Wednesday, IIT Bombay continues to be the best-ranked Indian institute at 172, notwithstanding a 20-slot dip from the 2020 ranking when it was at 152. IIT Delhi, at 182 last year, is now ranked 193.

IISc fell in the rankings by one spot from 184 to 185. In total, 21 Indian higher education institutions have found place among the world’s top 1,000. Of the 21 universities, 14 have fallen in the rank over the past 12 months, while four have improved their position.

Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, has been ranked 470 globally, an improvement of 21 places from last year when it was at 491.

“Though India’s universities have dropped as a group this year, this is because of other universities across the world making increasingly-intense efforts to enhance their educational offerings,” said Ben Sowter, the Director of Research at QS.

“To regain the lost ground, Indian higher education must find ways of increasing teaching capacity, and of attracting more talented students and faculty from across the world to study in India. There is plenty of potential, and there are pockets of excellence, within the Indian system,” Sowter added.

The QS Rankings is the second consecutive international list where Indian universities have fared poorly compared to 2020. Last week, the Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University rankings also showed that Indian institutes have slipped in their standings.

IIT Delhi Director V Ramgopal Rao, however, said the rankings should be viewed in a different context.

“The character of our institutions is different. Also, it is a marathon we are running, not a 100-mt race. This is a very dicey and a non-transparent metric. Also, we are known in India. But international reputation needs an altogether different strategy. We need a global campaign for education like what the country has done with ‘Incredible India’ for tourism,” Rao said.

“Need to hire a brand building agency and aggressively campaign our Study in India initiatives, highlighting the achievements of IITs and our top institutions. Also, perception-based scores by these agencies are open to a lot of fallacies and other considerations. We have all had issues with this,” he added.

The HRD Ministry’s National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) will be announced on Thursday. The rankings are usually announced in April but had to be postponed due to COVID-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) said it has maintained its position for third consecutive year in the coveted rankings.  It said it has been ranked at 15th among Indian institutions including IISc and IITs and at sixth position among universities in India.

RBSE 10th, 12th admit card 2020 released, here’s the direct link to download - education

RBSE 10th, 12th admit card 2020: Rajasthan Board of Secondary Education (RBSE) has released the hall tickets or admit card for the remaining RBSE board examinations for class 10th and 12th on Wednesday, June 10.

RBSE will conduct Class 12 examination from June 18 to 30, while the class 10 exams will be held from June 27 to 30.

School Principal will have to login on the website at rajeduboard.rajasthan.gov.in using their school login ID and password to download the admit cards of students and then provide them the hardcopy of it.

According to media reports, the Rajasthan board examination centres have been increased to follow the social distancing guidelines issued by the central government. The remaining examinations will be held across 6201 examination centres. Earlier, the board had 5680 examination centres.

NIRF Ranking 2020 Latest Updates: MHRD to release ranking of Indian universities today - education

Union Human Resource Development minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank will on Thursday release the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) Ranking 2020 at 12 noon. HRD minister will be live through webcast on his Twitter page @DrRPNishank to announce the ranking. Every year, MHRD ranks the universities and institutions of India based on the pre-determined parameters. In the year 2019, IIT Madras had topped the list of higher education institutions followed by IISc Bengaluru and IIT Delhi. Here we bring to you full details about NIRF Rankings.

Tripura professor develops robot to help health workers serving Covid-19 patients - education

In order to help the medical professionals serving COVID-19 patients, a young assistant professor has developed a robot, named ‘COVID-19 WARBOT’ that can serve food, medicines and other essential items to the patients without human intervention. “It’s a four-wheeled robot which I have developed at my home using the waste material. The main motivation behind making this robot is basically ensuring and safeguarding our health workers – doctors and nurses – who are working in COVID related hospitals,” said Harjeet Nath, Assistant Professor at Tripura University’s Chemical and Polymer Engineering Department.

“Some countries have already developed robots which are helping the healthcare workers a lot. This robot can deliver medicines, water bottles and food packets whenever required. There is also a camera if the patient wants to communicate to the doctor,” he added.

Harjeet shared that it took him two weeks to develop the robot by spending around Rs 25,000 and using spare parts like three motors, two rechargeable lead-acid batteries, transmitter and receiver and USB output.

The robot can carry the load of around 10-15 kilograms of materials like medicines, food, water and its operating range is 15-20 metres with a mobile phone or computer. It can work continuously for nearly an hour.

Harjeet said that he intends to handover the robot to the state government so that it can be used in COVID hospitals.

DU Admissions 2020: Registration likely to open from Jun 20, no trial for sports quota due to Covid-19 - education

The registration process for admission in Delhi University courses is likely to begin from June 20, but there will be no trials for sports and Extra-Curricular activities (ECA) due to the coronavirus pandemic, officials said on Wednesday. A meeting of the Standing Committee on Admissions decided on Tuesday that registration will be opened between June 20 and July 4 for all courses, said a member. The second window for registration will be opened for updation of marks after declaration of results by the CBSE. 

The cut-offs are likely to be announced in August, but it will depend also on when the CBSE declares its results. There will be no admission in ECA except for NCC and NSS and that too on the basis of the certificates as no trials will be conducted, the member said, adding this was decided keeping in mind the coronavirus situation. There will no trials for sports quota and the admission will be done on the basis of certificates only, he said. Another professor, who was present in the meeting said, the entire admission process will be online and students will not have to visit colleges. It was also decided that the documents which are bona fide and once submitted online on the basis of which approval is given for the admission by the college, cannot be rejected later on the premise that document is not acceptable, unless it is forged. 

The college can ask for additional information through phone or e-mail, the member said. “Another fact that was agreed to by the committee was that any discrepancy in the spelling of name or missing of surname in the certificates of SC/ST/OBC/EWS/PwD shall be verified from their other certificates rather than rejecting their admission,” he added. It was also agreed upon that the list of approved boards should be published in the undergraduate information bulletin so that the college admission committees know which boards are fake. The committee also decided that caste certificate once made need not to be renewed and only renewal of income certificate will be required. Therefore, latest income certificates would be sufficient and the caste certificate can be older, the member said.

Academic Council member Dr Arun Kumar Attree recommended that no fees, specially cancellation fee of Rs. 1000, should be charged from SC/ST/OBC/EWS and PwD. However, the committee did not agree to his recommendations, Attree said, adding he recorded his dissent.

“It is exorbitant especially in corona times. It is actually done to discourage students from changing their colleges or courses. In this process, rich students are able to get the course and college of their choice but poor and disadvantaged students are denied this opportunity because of high cancellation fees. “Three free movements must be allowed to these disadvantaged students without cancellation,” Attree had suggested.

Mizoram Board 12th exams 2020 to resume on July 1 - education

The Mizoram government has once again postponed class-12 board examinations suspended midway due to the COVID-19 pandemic and decided to conduct it from July 1, an official said.

The examinations of Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) for remaining subjects in arts, science and commerce streams were supposed to be conducted from June 16 as per the revised schedule after these were postponed in April.

The remaining class-12 examinations will now be held between July 1 and 3, according to a notification issued by the Mizoram Board of School Education (MBSE) on Tuesday.

The examinations have been deferred as the government had imposed a complete lockdown till June 22, the official said.

About 4,700 students could not complete their board examinations in Economics, Chemistry, Sociology, Computer Science and Home Science, he said.

The examinations were suspended in March due to the lockdown.

The MBSE had, earlier, announced the resumption of the board examinations from April 22, which triggered stiff opposition from students citing various inconveniences amid the nationwide lockdown.

The authorities postponed it following an appeal by the central government to put on hold the examinations due to the lockdown.

The compartmental examinations for class-10 will also be held on July 1, the notification said.

UP Assistant Teachers’ Recruitment Exam: Candidate who scored 94% couldn’t name India’s President - education

The ‘success’ of Dharmendra Kumar, a candidate who scored 142 marks out of 150 and emerged as one of the toppers in the examination held for recruiting 69,000 assistant teachers in 2019, was exposed after the Prayagraj police busted a racket involved in enabling undeserving individuals make the cut in lieu of cash.

Kumar was among three candidates arrested. During police interrogation, he failed to answer simple general knowledge questions – the youth from Sarai Mamrej, Prayagraj also could not name the president of the country, when queried by police officials.

Dharmendra’s name was on the list of 20 candidates whose names were in the diary found from the gang members arrested by police. Among 20, 18 got selected with the help of unfair means and the question papers were allegedly provided by gang members.

The racket busted by Soraon police two days back allegedly provided question papers to 69,000 assistant teachers’ recruitment aspirants in return of cash. Eight people, including the kingpin of the gang, were arrested in this connection. Later, the police arrested three aspirants who cleared the examination through the racket.

ASP KV Ashok, who led the operation, said three successful candidates, including Dharmendra, Vinod and another youth, were traced and arrested on Saturday. It came to light that Dharmendra got 142 marks out of 150 in the recruitment examination.

Dharmendra had cleared the TET in 2018 and secured 126 rank out of 150 while he scored 57.1% in B.Ed, which he completed in 2012 from Sampurnand Sanskrit University, Varanasi from where also did his graduation in 2007 with 56.77%.

The name of Dharmendra and other two youths were found in the diary seized from the gang members arrested for helping candidates in cracking the teachers recruitment examination through fraudelant means, said SSP Satyarth Anirudh Pankaj.

“The youth’s failure to answer simple questions reveals the means of his success in the teachers’ recruitment examination. More candidates will be questioned after these arrests,” added SSP.

A question mark on recruitment process: Priyanka Gandhi

Congress national general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, in a tweet, said the anomalies in the assistant teachers’ recruitment exam were a big question mark on the entire recruitment process.

“The future of youths in Uttar Pradesh is being trampled. The government should bring out all the facts related to these anomalies in recruitments,” she said.
