Maharashtra Governor urges students to know about spiritual intelligence - education

Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari on Thursday said that the world was moving towards Artificial Intelligence (AI), but students should also acquire the knowledge of ‘spiritual intelligence’.

He also said that educational institutions will have to combine innovation and incubation with research and invention to become centers of excellence.

He was speaking while inaugurating HSNC Cluster University, a public-private partnership (PPP) initiative of the Hyderabad Sind National Collegiate (HSNC) Board and the Maharashtra government, via video-conference.

“The world is moving towards Artificial Intelligence,” the governor said, and urged the students to also acquire the knowledge of ‘adhyatmik’ (spiritual) intelligence, which is the “core heritage of the country”.

Recalling the words of Swami Vivekananda on education, the governor said students should endeavour to awaken the divinity and perfection within them through acquisition of knowledge.

He also said that all stakeholders need to work with coordination, dedication and discipline to improve the standards of higher education.

Koshyari said that the central government was keen on good colleges forming cluster universities.

“Such clusters would enable best colleges to become centres of excellence,” he said.

The governor complimented the HSNC Board for forming the cluster university comprising K C College, H R College and the Bombay Teachers’ Training College.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, who also attended the ceremony, lauded the HSNC Cluster University for offering choice-based courses in music, dance, art and other subjects.

“Art is an essential component of life…Art makes learning pleasurable and delightful. If I had not become chief minister, I would have become an artist. In fact, I am chief minister because I am an artist,” he said.

Thackeray described knowledge as an essential requirement of life.

“Therefore imparting education must be continued using technological tools even during calamity situations,” he said.

Maharashtra Minister of Higher Education Uday Samant said the government was considering a proposal to convert the Sir J J School of Art into a university.

He said the government was also considering a plan of creating vertical universities.

The IITs of Roorkee and Kharagpur and NIT Calicut were the top three architecture colleges. Delhi’s Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences, Manipal Institute of Dental Sciences and Dr D Y Patil Vidyapeeth Pune were the top three in the newly introduced Dental Colleges category.

Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director, IIT Madras, said, “We are delighted to maintain our top position for the fifth time running (in the engineering category) and ever since the NIRF rankings were launched. This is the result of the excellent work of our faculty, students and staff, and we look forward to continue on the path of excellence in the coming years and make a mark nationally and internationally.”

HRD minister Pokhriyal said that these rankings acts as a guide to students for selection of universities based on a set of criteria and helps universities to improve their performance. Minister of State for HRD Sanjay Dhotre said participation in such ranking framework shows the confidence of the institution.

The ranking framework evaluates institutions on five parameters: Teaching, Learning and Resources (TLR), Research and Professional Practice (RP), Graduation Outcomes (GO), Outreach and Inclusivity (OI) and Perception (PR).

A total 3771 institutions offered themselves for ranking under “Overall”, category-specific and domain-specific rankings for India Rankings 2020. Schools, parents have increased role to play to ensure kids’ mental health during Covid-19: Experts - education

Schools and parents have bigger roles to play with kids being home-bound due to the COVID-19 pandemic so that the mental health issues arising due to outdoor activities being restricted can be addressed, according to experts.

Samir Parikh, director, Department of Mental Health and Behavioural Sciences, Fortis Hospital, has pointed out that the prevailing uncertainty surrounding the ongoing pandemic can give rise to feelings of stress and anxiety in adults and children alike.

“The lack of outdoor physical activity may lead children to feel more restless. The inability to meet and interact with peers may also create feelings of loneliness and isolation. In these times, it is important to allow children the space to express their thoughts and feelings and for adults to talk to children about the situation, but in a manner that is age-appropriate,” he said.

“It is recommended for parents to help provide a sense of normalcy in a child’s life by incorporating a structure and routine. Alongside, efforts should be made to encourage a sense of positivity. Help children see this as an opportunity to pick up a new skill or engage in a new hobby. Spend quality time as a family — have conversations over meals, play board games, revisit old photo albums or watch television together. Setting up interactions with friends through video-conference should also be encouraged,” Parikh added.

Universities and schools across the country have been closed since March 16, when the Centre announced a nationwide classroom shutdown as part of a slew of measures to contain the COVID-19 outbreak.

A 21-day nationwide lockdown was announced on March 24, which came into effect the next day. While the government has announced easing of certain restrictions, the schools and colleges continue to remain closed.

“It is important for schools to hold both structured and unstructured conversations around the pandemic and lockdown to allow the students the opportunity to express their concerns and use this time as a learning opportunity. Ensuring regular interactions with peers and teachers plays a significant role in helping children adjust with the transition as is being expected at these unprecedented times,” Parikh said.

According to Sushant Kalra, founder, Parvarish, an institute of parenting, children who are very high on physical, mental and emotional energy are not getting any outlet to express.

“Being confined to their homes without connecting with their peers, not being able to play, study, enjoy, eat, meet, celebrate, have bottled them up. The charged vibes from the adults in the family is adding to the unhealthy environment.

“A critical aspect of supporting children is to up the level of focus on the mental and emotional health of children and parents. Mental and emotional health has always taken a back seat when it comes to acquiring the necessary skills and even to acknowledge the need for the same. Also, the focus on nurturing life skills and competencies of children needs to be built into the curriculum,” he added.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has started a mental health helpline for students and live fitness sessions for children to keep them active during the pandemic.
